Devika Shayal Lata who is an avid reader developed a passion for literature by studying Shakespeare in high school.

Given her desire to delve more into this area, Lata chose to study Bachelor of Arts (Language & Literature) from the Fiji National University (FNU).

The former Rishikul High School student said she decided to join FNU after attending one of the Open Days at Nasinu Campus and interacting with faculty members from the College of Humanities and Education (CHE).

“FNU offers the best choice of contemporary literature, especially Post-Colonial Literature, which focuses on Fijian literature. The School of Communications, Language and Literature (SCLL) staff were intriguing and aspiring during the Open Day. They provided me with all pros and cons of studying the programme leading me to study this programme to develop my oral fluency, critical thinking, and written competence,” she said.

Lata, one of the first cohort to enrol in the programme, was also interested in the course because of the enormous variety encompassed within one programme.

“The programme focuses on linguistics, varieties of languages, second language acquisition, approach to language and literary studies, prose, poetry, and classical and contemporary drama in English and Hindi/ iTaukei /Urdu languages. At the same time, providing me with an option to a major in English and a minor in the local vernacular languages.”

The Nasinu lass believes that her undergraduate programme at FNU is preparing her for her career.

“The lecturers at FNU are well versed with the subject and give plenty of feedback and has been inspiring. I sought out as many opportunities to learn and gain experience as I could, and I found exactly that.”

“The staff at SCLL have been nothing short of supportive, insightful, and engaging in my journey at FNU. I cherish the relationships that I have to build with my lecturers and fellow students who helped to develop me into a better scholar, analytical and critical thinker and confident communicator.”

Lata will be completing her programme in December this year and highly recommends the programme to students interested in and passionate about studying Bachelor of Arts (Language & Literature).

“The programme has offered me new and challenging perspectives to make me think differently and extensively and have learnt something beyond my expectations. The study so far has been a brilliant adventure for me to challenge myself and push my learning potential forward continuously.
