In the world of academia, representing one’s institution on an international stage is a tremendous honour. Baadsha, a dedicated legal practitioner and academic at the Fiji National University (FNU), has been given this opportunity as the sole representative from Fiji and the entire Pacific region at the prestigious Falling Walls Lab in Aotearoa, New Zealand.

Baadsha was awarded this opportunity through his PhD in Law research which he currently pursues at FNU. Through his research which focuses on the legal framework of Fiji’s judiciary, Baadsha is addressing an area that has received little attention despite its critical importance. His research stands out not just within Fiji but across the developing South Pacific nations, where similar legal structures exist.

Through his comparative analysis of Fiji’s judicial system against international standards and practices of more developed nations, Baadsha hopes to identify areas where the judiciary’s structure could be enhanced. His goal is to contribute to the development and improvement of judicial systems across the Pacific, providing insights and recommendations that have the potential to bring about significant change.

For Baadsha, representing FNU and the Pacific region at the Falling Walls Lab is an honour and an opportunity to be the voice of the Pacific.

“It is an incredible honour to represent Fiji National University at such a prestigious event. Being the sole representative from Fiji and other

developing Pacific Island nations brings with it a unique responsibility to showcase the diverse perspectives and experiences of the region on an international stage,” said Baadsha.

“I expect this competition to be highly challenging, especially considering that it brings together the best students from different Universities. Competing against such a talented and diverse group of individuals will be both a test of my abilities and an opportunity to learn and grow from the experience.”

Baadsha’s vision for his research extends beyond academic achievements. He is committed to ensuring that his work has a tangible impact on the communities in Fiji and the broader Pacific region. With the vision of collaborating with various organisations and stakeholders, Baadsha aims to translate his research into real-life benefits that address the specific needs and challenges of the Pacific region.

“My long-term goal for my research is to ensure that it has a meaningful impact in Fiji and the Pacific,” he added.

In addition to his research, Baadsha is passionate about inspiring the next generation of legal professionals and researchers. He sees great potential in the students at FNU, many of whom he believes can become excellent researchers.

FNU’s senior leadership team has been instrumental in supporting Baadsha’s academic pursuits and promoting a culture of research excellence within the university. Through initiatives such as the joint PhD programme, FNU has provided Baadsha with valuable opportunities for academic growth and international collaboration.

Baadsha’s legal career is as impressive as it is inspiring. Admitted to the High Court of Fiji as a Barrister and Solicitor, as well as a Commissioner for Oaths, he has a solid foundation in the legal profession. His academic achievements are equally noteworthy, with a Master of Laws, a Postgraduate Diploma in Diplomacy and International Affairs, a Professional Diploma in Legal Practice, and a Bachelor of Laws.

His professional experience includes roles at the Fiji Attorney-General’s Office, the University of the South Pacific, and in private practice. Currently, he is a law lecturer at FNU, where he continues to contribute to the academic and legal community.

Baadsha pursues his PhD in law under the supervision of three esteemed academics, Professor Colin Picker (Deputy Vice-Chancellor College of Business and Law & Vice-President at RMIT University), Associate Professor Niamh Kinchin (University of Wollongong), and Associate Professor Asaeli Tuibeqa (Dean of the College of Business, Hospitality & Tourism Studies at FNU).
