The Fiji National University (FNU) will host its inaugural Community Market Day in order that our FNU family can in unity address together a number of pressing needs of our students who may require financial help. The FNU family will see a few of these initiatives jointly initiated by staff and students to also allow students to raise funds towards their financial needs at university while also reviving the spirit of entrepreneurship for the university. It will also be a fun-filled day!

The initiative will also provide a platform for micro, small and medium businesses to showcase their products where the university recognizes its pivotal role in driving economic growth and fostering local communities.

The Community Market Day is scheduled to take place on the 19 April 2024 at their Derrick Campus in Samabula with the possibility of organising similar events each subsequent month at other FNU campuses such as Natabua and Nasinu.

The FNU Vice-Chancellor Professor Unaisi Nabobo Baba urged the public to attend the market day as it serves as an avenue to empower the students and business owners by providing them with a platform to showcase their products and connect with potential customers.

“This event is set to be a celebration of entrepreneurship, community engagement, and holistic student development,” Professor Nabobo-Baba said.

“The Community Market Day presents a unique opportunity for FNU students to immerse themselves in the world of entrepreneurship. By actively participating in the event, students will gain practical insights into business operations, marketing strategies, and customer engagement, thus contributing to their holistic development beyond traditional classroom learning.”

Aligned with FNU’s Strategic Plan 2024-2026 Priority Area 1 on inclusiveness and diversity, the market day celebrates the richness of people, places, and cultures within Fiji and beyond.

The Market Day is also FNU’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in particular SDG 4, Quality Education.

“By promoting local entrepreneurship, fostering economic opportunities, and fostering collaboration between various stakeholders, the event contributes to the achievement of these global objectives.”

The community market day serves as a melting pot where diverse communities come together to share their traditions, crafts, and culinary delights, fostering a sense of unity and appreciation for cultural diversity.
