Representatives from the Fiji National University (FNU) and Wuyi University from the People’s Republic of China braved the inclement weather to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the Chinese Embassy in Nasese on Friday, 31 May.
The FNU delegation which was made up of members of the Senior Leadership Team was led by Vice-Chancellor, Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba, who expressed her joy about the value of strategic partnerships especially in higher education.
“The value of strategic partnerships in higher education is undeniable. By building bridges with prestigious institutions around the world, we cultivate a dynamic environment where cross-cultural exchange, diverse perspectives, and innovative research flourish,” said Professor Nabobo-Baba.
“Our partnership with Wuyi University, an institution renowned for its academic rigour and enduring contributions to education, aligns perfectly with our vision.”
The Vice-Chancellor said that the collaborative framework outlined by the MoU presented tremendous opportunities for both universities.
“University and student exchanges promise to broaden perspectives, deepen research endeavours, and inspire a generation of globally minded scholars. The sharing of resources, materials, and expertise will bolster our collective ability to address issues of shared importance and advance the boundaries of knowledge.”
Professor Nabobo-Baba highlighted that jointly organised conferences and academic meetings will serve as powerful platforms for sharing cutting-edge research, fostering intellectual exchange, and building networks of scholars dedicated to making a positive impact on the world.
The President of Wuyi University, Dr Yunhua Zhang, expressed his gratitude to the Chinese Ambassador to Fiji as well as Professor Nabobo-Baba for the collaboration.
“It is the collaboration of two young universities, since Wuyi University is less than 40 years old and being young means having a promising future that is full of hope!” said President Zhang.
Wuyi University is looking forward to collaborating with FNU through scientific research, particularly in medicine, nursing, and engineering. The Jiangmen city based university is also looking forward to cultural exchange as the President explained that culture is boundless and needs to be shared.
