FNU refutes false claims

Press Release Posted On: June 25, 2021

The Fiji National University (FNU) Vice-Chancellor Professor Toby Wilkinson has categorically rejected claims made on social media that students residing at the hostel on Nasinu Campus do not have food.

“There is simply no truth in this claim,” stated Professor Wilkinson.

“We have repeatedly made it clear that the welfare of our students is our number one priority, and that our teams are looking after the students in our care. This includes the provision of food and other necessities to any student who needs them. The University maintains stores of food and students know that they can request supplies from our Estates and Facilities team at any time.”

“The Fiji National University has been providing food and other necessities to students since the lockdowns and we have been constantly been in touch with them through messages, student representatives, and staff on the ground. As Vice-Chancellor, I have personally briefed our hostel wardens, housemasters and housemistresses so they know how to advise and support the students in their care.”

“Furthermore, we are working closely with the FNU Students’ Association to ensure that all students are supported and looked after.”

“It is very disappointing when public figures exploit the current situation to further their own agendas. Spreading false information and misrepresenting the situation of our students only adds to the anxieties felt by members of our community at a difficult time. I can assure all Fijians that the Fiji National University will continue to place the welfare of its students as its top priority” said Professor Wilkinson.
