The Fiji National University (FNU) was presented with regional accreditation certificates for four micro-qualifications by the Pacific Community (SPC).

The accreditation is for courses on how to ‘Provide Hospitality and Tourism Services’, ‘Manage Front Office and Customer Relations’, ‘Demonstrate Technical and Networking Skills in ICT’ and ‘Develop and Manage a Food Safety System in the Workplace’.

Micro-qualifications are an initiative by SPC’s Educational Quality and Assessment Programme (EQAP) to offer a pathway for the accreditation of short courses in the Pacific region.

FNU Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Learning and Teaching), Professor Lisa Harrison highlighted that it was not an easy process acquiring these micro-qualifications during the brunt of the pandemic.

Pacific Community (SPC) Deputy Director General, Dr Paula Vivili presenting a Certificate of Accreditation to the Fiji National University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Lyn Karstadt in Nabua, Suva.

“This accreditation marks an exciting milestone for FNU, as it places the University in a stronger position to extend its short courses to other Pacific Island countries,” she said.

SPC Deputy Director General, Dr Paula Vivili reflected on his vast knowledge of the Pacific Community and its people and partners:

“Being in the country for over the 20 years before joining SPC, one of the things that I have always felt was that the amount of training that we did for people, good training. We gave the people knowledge to do the job but did not give them the tool to be recognised,” he said.

“I have been around when the initial discussions for these micro-qualifications too place and since 2018, we have awarded over 20 micro-qualifications.”

“I am very pleased today that we are marking this occasion with FNU. This is the fifth micro-qualification that we have worked with FNU to attain accreditation, and this allows people to not fall through the education gap.”

The four micro-qualifications will be delivered by FNU’s National Training and Productivity Centre (NTPC).
