FNU receives accreditation certification

Press Release Posted On: December 11, 2023

The Fiji National University (FNU) embraces its responsibility to unlock doors of opportunity and empower individuals to shape their destinies.

FNU Acting Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Learning and Teaching), Dr Jimaima Lako made this statement during the presentation of Accreditation Certificates of five microqualification programmes offered by FNU.

Dr Lako welcomed the accreditation certification from The Pacific Community (SPC) for the:

  • Basic Operations in a call centre;
  • Delivering housekeeping and accommodation services;
  • Managing room division;
  • Planning and promoting hospitality sales and marketing; and
  • Applying leadership and management skills in the hospitality industry courses

“This recognition is a result of our unwavering commitment to academic excellence, innovation, research, the empowerment of our people and of course the pursuit of new knowledge with the preservation of our traditional knowledge,” she said.

FNU had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with SPC in 2019 to work together to formally accredit short course of skill sets that FNU has been delivering over the course of many years. SPC’s Educational Quality and Assessment Programme (EQAP) Department provided training to FNU staff on the development and accreditation of micro qualifications.

Dr Lako said that FNU was dedicated to fostering an environment that nurtured critical thinking, creativity, and global perspective.

“This is evident in our commitment to the achievement of SDGs which have been inextricably intertwined with our Strategic Plan, a plan that envisions a stronger, resilient, sustainable, and holistically empowered Fiji and the Pacific,” she said.

FNU Manager Programme Standards and Quality Enhancement, Parneet Singh added that the accreditation certificate was a testament to the unwavering commitment and dedication of every member of the FNU community.

“Your collective efforts have made this accreditation possible, and today, we celebrate not only a certificate but a symbol of our shared commitment to education and quality together,” Singh shared.

Pacific Community (SPC) Fiji Director Human Rights and Social Development and the Officer-in-Charge, Suva, Miles Young excitedly announced that the accreditation process has led to all micro-qualifications accredited through EQAP to be recognised by the Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF).

“We understand that this has been on FNU’s wish list for a long time, and it indeed is a milestone worth celebrating,” Young said.

“This means that the students, as well as parents who are members of FNPF, can access funds from their FNPF to pay for fees for themselves or their children should they wish to take up the micro-qualifications.”

Young further added that the presentation was a celebration of the culmination of the strong collaborative effort of FNU and SPC.

“This event is the third gathering where FNU and SPC have come together to celebrate the recognition of programmes that have formally been accredited through the application of a robust quality assurance process,” he shared.

“The five certificates of accreditation for five micro-qualifications will be presented signifying the completion of an intensive quality evaluation and assessment process.”
