Students at the Fiji National University (FNU), had the opportunity to meet employers and explore career options during the University’s first Placement Drive held in the Western Division this week.

Representatives from various organisations met with students to discuss work attachments, career pathways and opportunities in different industries.

FNU Student Support Coordinator Maraia Naqura said the initiative was aimed at making it easier for students to approach organisations and learn about opportunities related to their studies.

“We have brought the organisations to our campuses so students can liaise with them regarding their industrial attachments,” Ms Naqura said.

For 21-year-old Myran Maulio, the Placement Drive was a chance to learn more about the aviation industry and what he can expect after completing his studies.

A third-year student at FNU’s Pacific Centre for Aviation Studies (PCAS), Maulio is pursuing a Certificate in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (Avionics) (Level 4).

He was particularly interested in meeting representatives from Air Terminal Services Fiji (ATS), which is closely linked to his area of study and where his uncle is employed.

“I was interested in speaking to the team from ATS because I have an uncle who works there, and it is also linked to what I study. It was a great opportunity for me to speak with the organisation and learn more about how we can join the organisation, as it is a competitive field,” he said.

Pacific Island Beverages Manager Finance and Operations, Jashil Raniga, said the initiative was also useful for employers.

“It is the first time this opportunity has been created for both students and organisations. Given the current challenges, initiatives like this help us identify real workforce needs and connect students with meaningful employment opportunities,” Mr Raniga said.

The Placement Drive brought together representatives from Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay, Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort, BSP Life (Fiji) Limited, Air Terminal Services Fiji, Chelson Gordon Consultancy, Pacific Island Beverages, Bondwell, Social Innovation Fiji, IHG Hotels & Resorts, Elisha Engineering Co Pte Ltd, Rooster Poultry, Blue Gas, Newworld, R.C. Manubhai & Co. Pte Ltd and Fiji Revenue and Customs Service.

FNU’s National Training and Productivity Centre and College of Business, Hospitality and Tourism Studies also supported the initiative.

FNU thanks all participating organisations and staff who contributed to making the inaugural Placement Drive possible.

Organised by FNU’s Department of Student Support Services, the Placement Drive was held at the Bonunaqwele Nadi Campus on Tuesday and the Ba Campus on Thursday.
