The Fiji National University (FNU) will embark on engineering projects in the areas of finance, health, automation of transportation and maritime systems, tsunami alert systems and automatic flood monitoring systems through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with iMGINE Engineering & Technologies PTE Limited.

The MoU was signed at FNU’s College of Engineering, Science and Technology (CEST) last week by the FNU Acting Vice-Chancellor, Dr William May and iMGINE Engineering & Technologies PTE Limited Chairman, Winston Penjueli.

Dr May highlighted that the collaboration underpinned the University’s key Strategic Plan objectives of providing education for employability, research with real-world impact and an enriching student experience.

“As the national University, our core role is to provide quality and accessible technical and vocational education and training (TVET) and higher education learning to all our students,” Dr May said.

“In line with this, we continuously ensure that our programmes are focused, practical and industry relevant. This allows our students to be workforce-ready and able to contribute to the development of their communities and nations.”

“The Collaborative Projects undertaken as part of the MoU could address real-world issues faced by our country and its communities today. As a nation on the forefront of experiencing the effects of climate change, it is imperative that our students, staff, and industry partners work together on viable and sustainable solutions.”

Dr May added that the partnership was also in line with the University’s Sustainability Plan 2021-2026 of enhancing capacity through training and development, training our youth and leaders of tomorrow to embrace sustainability and utilising the University campuses as a living laboratory to provide solutions to address national and global challenges.

iMGINE Engineering & Technologies PTE Limited Board Director, Lorraine Foster said the MoU highlighted the organisation’s key objectives of identifying and realising meaningful projects that improved livelihoods.

“I think there is a general misconception that students are just learners, but as much as they will learn from us, we will also learn from them, as they are also innovators,” Foster stated.

“With this collaboration, we hope that students will learn from us at iMAGINE, and also use their innovative ideas to create and design as well.”

“As a 100% locally-owned company, we believe that it is everyone’s responsibility to take Fiji forward through learning, teaching and gaining from one another.”

“We are confident that this collaboration will be an exciting learning opportunity and will incite innovative ambitions that could bring a positive impact to our various industries and communities.”

“We are assuring the students that their learning experience will be very exciting.”

The MoU signing was attended by members of FNU’s Senior Leadership Team, College staff, students and representatives of iMGINE Engineering & Technologies Limited and invited stakeholders.
