Students from 12 Pacific Island countries attending the Fiji National University’s (FNU) College of Medicine, Nursing, and Health Sciences were reminded of the hopes and aspirations they were carrying for their nations and the need to remain focused as they started a new academic journey to become health professionals.

The students were officially welcomed by the College in a special ceremony witnessed by students, staff, education stakeholders and dignitaries from the 12 island nations yesterday.

Chief Guest and FNU’s Acting Vice-Chancellor, Dr William May said the university was proud to serve the people, the economy, and society of Fiji and the wider Pacific region by providing education and training for employability; carrying out research with real-world impact, aligned to national priorities and with global relevance; engaging proactively with stakeholders at the local, national and regional level and demonstrating leadership in sustainability.

“Our students are the primary reason we exist, and our duty is to provide them with the best possible experience that allows them to develop personally, morally, and spiritually as well as intellectually, and to thrive, learn, question, and succeed as global citizens,” Dr May said.

Dr May thanked the regional governments and acknowledged the bilateral arrangements with regional countries, the World Health Organization, and other development partners which provides opportunities for students to undertake their education at the Fiji National University.

“The onus is on you to deliver the best not only for this institution but also for everyone who has supported you or has high hopes for you, especially your parents and guardians who have sent you to FNU to pursue your studies in the medical field. Your hard work will be reflected on your parents’ faces when you graduate after a few years,” Dr May told students.

The Acting VC reminded students to remain focused and committed to their career goals. He also encouraged students to experience the Fijian culture while here.

“Learning always becomes enjoyable and meaningful when we come together from different backgrounds, countries, and cultures to work together for a common goal. In this case, for you all to become health workers and serve your country, communities, and your people with full dedication and commitment.”

Acting Dean CMNHS Dr Donald Wilson said FNU has produced quality doctors, nurses, and medical professionals in the past for the region, and the commitment remains the same—to guide, support, and provide students with all the resources to see them excel in their field of study.

“I am sure each one of you sitting here will excel with hard work, commitment, and dedication towards your career and your country,” he said.

“We want all our students to feel at home and build your future as your country and the people have high expectations of you to deliver in the health sector.

Esiaola Tatu, a Bachelor of Pharmacy student at CMNHS, said she was confident knowing the institute would provide her with the best resources for her to excel in her studies.

“We are assured that we hold a special place in the college and the university’s genuine pledge to nourish and empower our education and most importantly, our total development as scholars at this prestigious institution,” she said.

“With the flags raised high above, they will be constant reminders to all regional students of the need to strive for and contribute to the college’s ambition to raise medical services to international standards in the years to come.”

Third-year Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) student, Talimeli Taufetee from American Samoa, said she was proud to hoist the flag of her country.

“It was a very special moment for me to hoist the flag of my country at the ceremony. I will remember this for the rest of my life,” she said.

“I am also thankful to the FNU for providing us with the best resources so we can learn and give back to the community.”
