The Fiji National University (FNU) congratulates the University’s Head of School of Law, Assistant Professor Ana Rokomokoti, on her appointment as Commissioner, to lead the review of the Security Industry Act 2010 under the Fiji Law Reform Commission.

As Law Reform Commissioner, Ms  Rokomokoti will work with the Fiji Law Reform Commission to assess the current legislation and determine whether amendments are required to strengthen the legal framework governing Fiji’s private security industry.

Speaking on her appointment, Ms Rokomokoti said she was honoured to be entrusted with such a significant national responsibility.

“It is a privilege to contribute to a process that has the potential to strengthen Fiji’s legal framework and support a safer, more accountable security industry. Law reform is ultimately about ensuring our legislation continues to meet the needs of society while upholding justice, fairness and the public interest,” Ms Rokomokoti said.

She said the review presented an opportunity to ensure the legislation remained responsive to the country’s evolving security environment.

“As our communities, industries and technologies continue to evolve, such reviews provide an opportunity to identify areas for improvement, address emerging challenges and ensure the legislation remains practical, effective and fit for purpose,” she added.

Ms Rokomokoti also acknowledged the collaborative nature of the review process, noting that meaningful reform could only be achieved through broad consultation and shared expertise.

“Good law reform can be built on listening, collaboration and appreciation” Ms Rokomokoti stated.

FNU Vice-Chancellor Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba said Assistant Professor Rokomokoti’s appointment reflected her outstanding legal expertise, commitment to public service and dedication to advancing the rule of law.

Professor Nabobo-Baba added the appointment also demonstrated the University’s growing contribution to national development through research, policy and professional leadership.

Assistant Professor Rokomokoti was appointed by the Acting Attorney-General, Honourable Siromi Turaga, with the support of the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs, to lead the important legislative review aimed at ensuring Fiji’s security industry legislation remains relevant, effective and responsive to contemporary needs.

FNU extends its warmest congratulations to Assistant Professor Rokomokoti and wishes her every success as she leads this important review, which will help strengthen Fiji’s legislative framework and contribute to the continued development of the nation’s security sector.
