Prospective students from various secondary schools around the country engaged with academic experts in numerous disciplines and study areas at the Fiji National University (FNU) during the Virtual Outreach Activities that began today.

FNU’s Virtual Outreach Activities (VOA) is a three-week long event organised for Year 12 and Year 13 students to discover what makes studying at Fiji’s only dual-sector University a life-changing experience. Sessions are also designed for Parents, Careers teachers, Higher Degrees by Research (HDR) students and those interested in reskilling or upskilling opportunities at FNU.

High school participants were able to listen to presenters from FNU’s College of Humanities and Education (CHE), College of Business, Hospitality and Tourism Students (CBHTS), College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences (CMNHS), College of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (CAFF), College of Engineering, Science and Technology (CEST), Fiji Maritime Academy (FMA), National Training and Productivity Centre (NTPC) and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Pasifika.

Students also had the opportunity to raise their queries during the Question and Answer session about the courses and entry requirements.

Shimran Chetty, 18, was among the many students who participated virtually to discover what interested her and what the University had to offer.

“The Virtual Outreach Activities caught my attention and I did not want to miss the opportunity. It was a perfect time to meet the lecturers and find out more about the different Colleges at FNU,” said Chetty.

The Year 13 student from Penang Sangam High School was fascinated with the Bachelor of Nursing programme offered by the College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences (CMNHS).

“Nursing has always been in my mind and today I got assurance on where I can attain my formal education from,” she stated.

Chetty took advantage of the information she received and instantly applied for next year’s intake during Semester 1, 2022 studies.

“Taking into consideration the information provided by the University during the webinar on the registration process, I logged into the FNU portal to submit my application.  I faced some glitches due to internet connection and raised the matter to the FNU staff present online.  I am awe-struck that within minutes, a representative from the University reached out to assist me.”

The prospective FNU student has encouraged other secondary school students to participate in the online consultation to make an informed decision about their future.

Students completing Year 12 or 13 also have the opportunity to undergo studies in a technical and vocational education and training (TVET) course at FNU through the 5,000 Tertiary Scholarships and Loans Service (TSLS) placements.

Offered through the University’s TVET Pasifika, these courses are Certificate III, Certificate IV and Trade Diploma level qualifications. Students eligible for TSLS-funded studies must have successfully completed Year 12 with a minimum mark of 200/400 or completed Level 1 and II studies from the Technical College of Fiji.

Prospective students and interested participants can register and participate in the livestream sessions during the University’s Virtual Outreach Activities (VOA) by emailing outreach@fnu.ac.fj or call the Outreach team on 931 7582.
