A passion for fabrication and welding has propelled Fiji National University (FNU) apprentice Joseph Daucakamana onto the international stage, where he proudly represented the University at the International Skills Competition in Timor-Leste.
The second-year apprentice, employed by the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) in Labasa, competed in the welding category at the prestigious regional Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) competition, marking a historic first for FNU. The opportunity for Joseph was both humbling and inspiring.
“Learning that I had been selected to represent FNU was overwhelming. I felt an incredible sense of pride and excitement. The greatest honour was knowing that I would be representing my workplace, University and most importantly my nation that has invested so much in my professional development,” Joseph said.
Determined to transform his passion for welding into a profession, Joseph enrolled in FNU’s apprenticeship programme while working at FSC, where he continues to build his technical expertise.
One of the most memorable aspects of the competition for Joseph was, connecting with fellow competitors from across the Pacific.
“Meeting participants from different Pacific Island countries created a strong sense of regional solidarity. We shared experiences, ideas, and different approaches to our trade, which made the experience even more meaningful,” he said.

Accompanying Joseph to Timor-Leste was the Head of Department for Manufacturing and Printing, Ms Madhu Mala, whose mentorship played a pivotal role in his preparation.
Reflecting on the experience, Ms Mala said the competition reinforced the critical role technical education plays in national development.
“It highlighted the importance of combining quality teaching, industry standards and practical skills to prepare students for real-world challenges,” she said.
As one of FNU’s female leaders in engineering and manufacturing, Ms Mala hopes her achievement will inspire more women and girls to pursue careers in STEM and the TVET sector.
“We need to continue breaking stereotypes associated with technical trades. By creating inclusive learning environments, strong mentorship opportunities and visible role models, we can demonstrate that technical excellence is not determined by gender,” Ms Mala stated.
The Manager Apprenticeship and Trade Test, Alvin Lal, said FNU’s participation marked a defining moment in the University’s commitment to producing globally competitive trades professionals.
“The International Skills Competition is a prestigious regional TVET event that showcases excellence in vocational skills while bringing together outstanding young competitors, industry experts and training institutions.”
“This year’s competition marked FNU’s first participation, providing our apprentice and trainers with the opportunity to benchmark their skills against international competitors, gain exposure to emerging technologies and global industry standards, and strengthen partnerships with regional institutions,” Mr Lal said.
He added that the milestone aligns with Fiji’s national priorities of developing a highly skilled workforce, improving youth employability, and supporting sustainable economic growth through quality vocational education.
For Joseph, he attributes much of his success to the mentors who guided him throughout his journey, including lecturers Mr Jiale Litidamu, Mr Rudra Nand and Ms Madhu Mala, as well as workplace mentors.
“They have all played an important role in encouraging me and helping me build my confidence and technical skills,” he said.
Looking ahead, Joseph plans to complete his qualification and continue building his career as a certified welder with FSC. He also encourages aspiring apprentices to embrace the opportunities offered through FNU.
“The apprenticeship programme gives you the best of both worlds. You earn while you learn. It combines classroom knowledge with real industry experience, helping you build practical skills, confidence, and a strong foundation for your future career,” Joseph stated.
