Emotions Abound as Graduation Day Draws Near

Posted On: November 30, 2023

Graduations represent the culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and perseverance for teachers and especially students.

The prospect of moving on to the next phase of life, whether it is to start a career, further education or pursue other goals brings about excitement and anticipation for what lies ahead.

As the Fiji National University prepares for the final graduation ceremony of 2023, the academic office at Nasinu Campus is abuzz with graduating students finalising logistical preparations for the ceremony, including the collection of their graduation gowns.

One can notice the emotions on students’ faces as they proceed with the logistics of graduation day.  Some shared smiles, looks of contentment and relief, some grinned from ear to ear, and there were a few with blank expressions.

Amongst the revelry, quietly sat Wiliam Douglas Wailevu.

Douglas, from Kanacea village in Vuna, Taveuni will be graduating with a Diploma in Engineering (Civil) (Level 6) from the College of Engineering, Science, and Technology (CEST) on Thursday, 13 December. He is currently serving his six-month attachment with the National Fire Authority (NFA) in Nasinu.

As he reflected on his journey towards finally completing his Diploma, he began to well up in tears.

“Success is achieved through hard work and perseverance. Having a supportive family and network is also crucial and I have made it this far because of them,” Douglas shared.

“I was raised by my grandparents, and it was not an easy journey.  They were able to support me and saw me from my primary to tertiary studies.”

“This moment is a milestone achievement for my family, seeing that all the struggles and hard work put into my studies have paid off. I only wish my Nau (grandmother) whom I lost last year was here to witness this achievement.”

“I dedicate this Diploma to my grandparents, especially my families in Kanacea, and everyone who has helped me in my journey to this day”.

“Nothing is so difficult that it cannot be solved. There is always a solution to every problem and that is your faith in God, effective communication, good relations, and asking for help when you need it.”

Douglas will be among hundreds of FNU students from the five main FNU Colleges, Fiji Maritime Academy (FMA), and National Training and Productivity Centre (NTPC) who will be graduating. FNU’s December Graduation will be held from 13-14 December 2023.
