In the lush, verdant hills of Waica village on Fiji’s picturesque Taveuni Island, a young man’s dream is taking root.
Liwai Roko Kabuyawa Duguca, an 18-year-old from a humble, biracial family, has made a remarkable step forward, becoming the first in his family to step into the hallowed halls of higher education.
This year, he is set to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture at the Fiji National University’s (FNU) College of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (CAFF) marking a milestone that not only signifies his personal ambition but also highlights the transformative power of education in the heart of Fiji’s rural communities.
Duguca’s journey to FNU began with a simple yet profound decision: to follow in the footsteps of his father, Nilesh Chand, a farmer by trade.
The former Holy Cross College student spent his childhood surrounded by the rhythms of nature—fields of crops, the gentle hum of livestock, and the steady, reliable work of farming. It was here that his deep appreciation for agriculture blossomed.
“I chose agriculture because I see so much potential in it,” Duguca said as he picked up his offer letter at the FNU Nasinu Campus, excited but humble.
“I want to learn more about how to improve our farming techniques and help my community with the knowledge I gain. As I embark on this exciting yet challenging new chapter of my life, I am driven by a passion for farming.”
“My parents have long sacrificed to provide for our family and now I am determined to see them reap the fruit of their labour in me.”
“I sincerely thank FNU for accepting my application and also giving me the opportunity to excel in life through this agriculture programme,” said Duguca.
This moment was emotional for his father, Nilesh Chand, who has spent years toiling on the land to provide for his family.
“I am so proud of my son,” Chand said as tears rolled down from his eyes.
“I always knew he had potential and seeing him take this step is a blessing. I believe he will not only learn the science of agriculture but will also gain important skills that will make a difference to our nation’s agricultural future.”
Enrolments for Semester 1, 2025 are underway at FNU and will close on 14 February 2025.
