Derrick Rugby Teams continue to strive

Press Release Posted On: September 26, 2024

The relentless effort, humble attitude, and mutual respect have fostered a strong team spirit, allowing the Fiji National University (FNU) Derrick Rugby Teams to achieve consistent success on the rugby field.

They have made their mark in the Inter-Campus and Inter-Tertiary Tournament.

Manager and lecturer Nanise Rokobani said that the key factor behind the Derrick Rugby Team’s continued success in the Rugby Inter-Campus and Inter-Tertiary Tournament lies in their determination and hard work.

“The players consistently push themselves to improve both individually and as a team, showing an unwavering commitment to their training and matches. However, what truly sets them apart is their humility and respect toward their opponents, coaches, and each other,” Rokobani said.

“As a female team manager and lecturer, I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to lead and support the University Rugby Boys during this remarkable 2023-2024 Rugby 15s season. Being both a leader and a motherly figure to the team has allowed me to impact the players meaningfully, both on and off the field.”

Motherly Figure

Rokobani emphasised that her approach to the teams is rooted in empathy, guidance, and encouragement, fostering an environment where the boys feel supported not just as athletes but as individuals.

On the field, her leadership emphasises discipline, teamwork, and resilience, helping the players push beyond their limits.

“Off the field, I am committed to nurturing their personal growth, ensuring they maintain a balance between their studies and sports, while also teaching the values of respect, humility, and responsibility. This combination of strong guidance and care has created a positive, motivating atmosphere, contributing significantly to their success this season,” Rokobani said.

“This year, our team faced a unique challenge as it was our first time participating in the Suva Rugby Union Club Game (Koroturaga Cup), which is held every Saturday. The boys represented Fiji National University in this highly competitive environment. As a female team manager, alongside my colleague Madam Adi Tui as the female team coach, each day brought its own challenges, not just on the field but also in supporting the boys beyond rugby.”

Proud Moment

Rokobani expressed pride in how far the teams have come.

“I’m always proud of the boys, especially considering how we started from scratch with whatever little support we could provide, and they are always so grateful for it. But one moment that truly brought me to tears of joy and pride was during the Inter-Tertiary final this year when the boys faced the University of the South Pacific,” she said.

“We all know that USP lacks nothing in terms of rugby kits, facilities, or coaching staff, which includes a national-level coach. Many of their players are also part of the top clubs around Suva.

“Despite these differences, with just words of encouragement and our unwavering commitment to the team, the boys never let any of that overwhelm them. They played with heart, determination, and unity, making both myself and the entire Fiji National University proud. That final was more than just a match; it was a testament to their growth, resilience, and belief in themselves, no matter the odds.”

Challenges

“Managing the logistics of rugby kits, arranging bus fares for training sessions or pool games on Saturdays, sharing our lunch with them, and being there to listen and help with their personal or family issues were all part of the daily hurdles we faced,” Rokobani said.

“Our goal was to ensure that the boys carried fewer burdens, allowing them to focus on their performance and well-being. The coaching staff and I collaborated closely, balancing our roles as mentors and supporters.

“We worked together to ensure the team was well-prepared physically, emotionally, and mentally, overcoming obstacles with determination and unity. This holistic support system contributed to the team’s resilience and ability to rise to the occasion during such a challenging and rewarding season.”

Future Plans

“Our main goal for the Derrick Rugby Teams moving forward is to continue molding these upcoming players, helping shape their dreams and aspirations, particularly for those who aim to become professional rugby players. We want to build not only their skills on the field but also their discipline and character off the field, preparing them for the challenges of professional rugby. Additionally, we have a bigger vision for the team.

“We plan to request the FNU Board Members for the opportunity for the Derrick Boys to represent the university in the International University Rugby 15s Tournament next year. This would be a huge step for the team, giving them international exposure and experience that would further their development and bring pride to our university.”
