Stranded Fiji National University students at the Natabua campus, Lautoka, received sanitary needs and food supplies on Sunday, one day after their plight was highlighted in this newspaper.

This newspaper published an article on Saturday about 150 students who were stuck at the campus because of the COVID-19 Lautoka lockdown.

Rebecca Matai, a spokeswoman for the students, called for food, sanitary aid and personal protective equipment in the article.

In response to the article, Punjas Ltd delivered soap, hand-washes and biscuits to the students on Sunday.

“We are extremely grateful to Punjas Ltd for helping our students at these difficult times and also to The Fiji Times for sharing this story,” said FNU Students Association president Ketan Lal.

“It is indeed a time for people to come together and help each other and we are grateful for the help given to our members stranded in Lautoka campus.”

Meanwhile, FNU acting vice-chancellor Prof James Pounder said students at Natabua and McGregor House were looked after well by hostel supervisors, housekeepers and kitchen staff.

“The university is also well-stocked on soaps, disinfectants and other hygiene materials at these residential halls,” he said.

“In the event of an emergency, please rest assured that the university has enough food stock to feed the students staying in these residential facilities.”
