Chatter on social media of the inferiority of credits presented by Fiji National University compared with other tertiary institutions is not true, says Tui Macuata Ratu Wiliame Katonivere.

Addressing the 101 graduates of the university’s Labasa campus last week, Ratu Wiliame called on students to take pride in their achievements.

“Stay focused and think of the sacrifices and those that got you here today,” he urged graduates.

Ratu Wiliame said their achievements was an addition to their resumes, adding that it should not be a story of what they strived to be but who they wanted to be.

Speaking from personal experience, Ratu Wiliame said, while taking up his traditional role as paramount chief of Macuata, he was given two options.

To swim or sink, as he was not prepared for the role.

“Confidently I am telling you today I am a good swimmer because my learning experiences have taught me how to prove myself,” he said.

“When you know your true purpose, you will know your work is not a chore and that it is a calling applying all your knowledge to see that your goals are executed.”

Vice-chancellor Prof Nigel Healey said the ceremony for the 100 plus students was for the class of 2019 who were supposed to graduate in December last year.

The event was postponed because of the measles epidemic.

The university’s pro-vice-chancellor (learning and teaching) Prof James Pounder, and Dean, College of Humanities and Education Dr Eci Nabalarua were also in attendance.
