Labasa, Fiji – 17 April 2026 — The Fiji National University’s (FNU) Centre for Graduate Studies (CGS) has reinforced its commitment to postgraduate education through a successful Talanoa Session held at its Naiyaca Campus in Labasa.
The session brought together graduate students and academic supervisors in an open and culturally grounded forum designed to encourage dialogue, collaboration, and shared learning. Rooted in the Pacific tradition of talanoa, the event created space for participants to openly discuss their academic journeys, including the challenges and opportunities associated with postgraduate study.
Discussions during the session focused on key areas such as research development, supervisory relationships, and the range of support services available to students. Organisers said the initiative aimed to strengthen engagement between students and the Centre while improving awareness of academic expectations and institutional processes. Acting Dean and Director of CGS, Associate Professor Dr Mumtaz Alam, reaffirmed the Centre’s ongoing commitment to student success. He highlighted the availability of critical resources, including research training programmes, ethics support, and academic guidance, encouraging students to make full use of these services to enhance their academic progress.

The Fiji National University Student Association (FNUSA) President, Dr Mohammed Iqbal also addressed participants, sharing personal insights to motivate students. He emphasised the evolving research landscape and noted that the establishment of CGS has streamlined processes, effectively serving as a “one-stop shop” for graduate research support.
Students who attended the session welcomed the opportunity to engage directly with the CGS team and peers. Many said the discussions helped clarify key academic procedures and provided reassurance about the support systems in place. The Centre for Graduate Studies continues to roll out similar initiatives across campuses, with a focus on strengthening student engagement and ensuring graduate students are equipped to excel in their research and academic pursuits.
Associate Professor Alam also acknowledged the continued support of Vice-Chancellor, Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba and Pro Vice-Chancellor Corporate Services, Professor Nii-K Plange in advancing the Centre’s work.
