SUVA, FIJI – For many students, University life is a careful balancing act. For the Fiji National University’s Bachelor of Science in Agriculture second-year student, Muizz Mujib Buksh, that balance extends far beyond lecture halls and laboratories into the fast-paced world of futsal officiating. At just 21, Buksh has mastered the art of managing two demanding commitments—his academic journey at FNU’s College of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (CAFF) and his passion as an Oceania Football Cooperation (OFC) level referee. Buksh admits that juggling his dual roles is not always easy, however, he approaches both with professionalism that keeps him grounded and focused.

“It’s all about a strict schedule. I treat my studies like a job and my refereeing like a professional commitment. I even use digital tools and custom logic to stay organised and ensure neither side of my life suffers,” he said. Time is his biggest challenge—especially during exams or tournaments. “I manage it through discipline over motivation. If I’m traveling, I bring my notes and make use of gaps in my day.”

This demanding lifestyle has shaped him into a focused individual. Refereeing has strengthened his character and developed key skills like decisiveness, leadership, and conflict resolution.

“In futsal, you must make instant decisions and stand by them. That confidence carries into everyday life,” he explained. He adds that refereeing has improved his discipline as a student, helping him stay focused and meet deadlines.

His passion for futsal continues to drive him. “I’ve always loved the fast pace. Officiating allows me to stay involved while challenging myself at a high level.”

Beyond sports, Buksh is passionate about agriculture. Growing up in Labasa, he developed a strong connection to farming and aims to contribute to Fiji’s development through modern agricultural practices.

“I want to bridge the gap between science and practical farming. Using technology to improve productivity and sustainability is my goal.”

“Don’t feel like you have to choose one over the other. Sports support your studies. With good time management, you can succeed in both.”
