Dr Ravita D. Prasad, an Assistant Professor of Physics at the School of Sciences at Fiji National University presented  seminar titled “Clean cooking energy access in Fiji: Kavewa Island case study”.

Date: 30th April 2025

Abstract:

Small Island Developing States (SIDS) often rely on firewood for cooking, leading to detrimental environmental, health, economic, and educational consequences. To address this, achieving Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG7) through clean cooking energy solutions is paramount. This presentation examines the impact of a biogas digester and stove project on Kavewa Island, Fiji, where 22 households participated. A questionnaire survey, administered to the main cook in each household, was conducted before and after implementation. The presentation will detail the project’s findings, including changes in cooking practices and perceived benefits, and discuss the resulting policy implications for scaling clean cooking initiatives in SIDS.
