A spirited Year 5 student from Nasautoka District School has set his sights on becoming a ship captain, inspired by the visit from the Fiji National University team to his school today. Nine-year-old, Abeuta Uluvai’s encounter with maritime experts has sparked a new ambition to navigate the waters as a seafarer.
Initially shy, Uluvai hesitated to approach the Fiji National University (FNU) team during their visit. However, when he heard the word “waqa,” meaning “boat” in iTaukei, he eagerly stepped forward, eager to learn more about the maritime course being offered. His curiosity was sparked by the sight of the Pacific Centre for Maritime Studies (PCMS) representatives and their display of information.
Later, Uluvai shared his newfound dream with his grandmother, Raijeli Evia, who was sitting among other village ladies watching the celebrations for Nasautoka District School’s 100th anniversary. With a proud smile, he told her he wanted to become a ship’s captain, steering through the open sea, guiding ships safely to port.
Evia, a caring grandmother and mother of six, expressed her joy when she heard about her grandson’s interest. “It makes me so happy to see our children being given guidance and opportunities i never had,” she said, tears of pride in her eyes.
“When I was in primary school, I didn’t get the chance to go to university, but now I see the next generation being inspired to reach for their dreams.”
“FNU’s visit to our village means a lot. It’s not often we see educators come directly to us and tell our children how important education is. They have opened a new horizon for our young ones.”
Evia spoke of the difference FNU has made: “Instead of us travelling to Suva to find out about programmes, FNU came to our doorstep. They’ve brought hope and a real chance for our children to succeed. We want our children to learn and grow, and FNU is helping us turn those dreams into reality.”
Uluvai remains determined to work hard and make his dream come true. “I want to become a boat captain. I will study hard, learn all I can about boats and navigation, and one day, I will be the one at the helm, leading the crew across the open water.”As his grandmother and community cheer him on, Uluvai’s story reminds us that with guidance, opportunity, and a little determination, even the youngest sailors can set sail towards a brighter future.
