Panapasa Railala is a young man with a clear vision — to challenge gender stereotypes and forge his own path in the healthcare industry. During Fiji National University’s outreach at Ratu Sukuna Memorial School’s 65th Anniversary celebrations, Railala discovered a new ambition that has ignited his future: becoming a nurse.
A Year 13 student at RSMS, Railala hails from the village of Vatoa in Lau. He is currently studying Home Economics, Chemistry, and Biology, alongside English and Mathematics, with hopes of pursuing a Diploma in Nursing.
His interest in healthcare was sparked by his admiration for his aunt, who is a nurse, and he aspires to be the first male nurse serving in Lau’s health administration.
“I’ve always looked up to my aunt,” Railala said. “She’s shown me that men can also excel in caring professions, and I want to prove that gender doesn’t define what we can achieve.”
As the eldest sibling among three, Railala is keen to set an example for others.
“I want to break the barrier that says nursing is only for women,” he added.
“I believe with dedication and passion, I can make a difference in my community.”
His determination to pursue a traditionally female-dominated career reflects his courage and commitment to challenging societal norms.
