Unit Name: Safety in Clinical Laboratory

Description: Safety in the laboratory is of the utmost importance. Most laboratory accidents are prevented by exercising proper techniques. Safe laboratory practices require a personal commitment to and concern to others. It is important to know the proper safety factors and precautions to take to prevent accidents and injuries while on the job. Hazards include fire, explosives, laboratory hazards, electrical hazards, radioactivity, chemical spills, mechanical hazards and allergies. All patients and healthcare workers must be protected from hazardous events on a daily basis.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to : 1. Demonstrate knowledge of laboratory safety rules regarding Phlebotomy 2. Recognize and adhere to Occupational Health and Safety policies and regulations 3. Identify chemical, physical and biological hazard in a laboratory. 4. Demonstrate and apply infection control practices and guidelines related to phlebotomy. 5. Implement safety practices to reduce the risk of sharps and needle-stick injury. 6. Describe proper procedures used in laboratory waste management 7. Discuss importance of sterilization and disinfection practices to ensure patient safety.

Prerequisite: Pass in Year 13 examination (or equivalent) and as per Minimum Entry Requirement (MER).
