Unit Name: Phlebotomy

Description: This unit discusses the recommended blood collection steps in detail especially the venepuncture procedure, blood donor collection procedures, capillary puncture and bleeding time test. Furthermore, this unit will encompass correct identification of patient, preparation of patient before a special test, urgency of requested tests, storage, handling and transportation of specimen in a clinical laboratory.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to : 1. Identify the various types of blood collection equipment, materials and anticoagulants in terms of its use and function. 2. Describe the structure and function of specified blood 3. collection sites. 4. Describe and demonstrate venous blood collection. 5. Perform capillary blood collection procedures 6. Describe and perform donor recruitment and donor blood collection. 7. Discuss possible complications of phlebotomy. 8. Explain and practice the procedure for collecting radial artery blood gas, bleeding time and cannulation. 9. Discuss the requirements for timed specimen. 10. Describe the collection and handling of non-blood specimens. 11. Understand the principle of Electrocardiography and its importance for patient care and monitoring

Prerequisite: Pass in Year 13 examination (or equivalent) and as per Minimum Entry Requirement (MER).
