Unit Name: Professional Practice
Description: This course is one semester compulsory clinical attachment where phlebotomy students will be at the outpatient department of the various pathology laboratories. Although they have had some exposure to the clinical situation in the course, students will really be involved with the patients [performing venepuncture] specimen collection. The 14 weeks clinical attachment will be in six health care facilities in the Medical Laboratories pre-analysis section (Phlebotomy Sections).The attachments will be in Hospital Ante-natal lab, Laboratory Outpatient, Laboratory Registration Reception, Blood bank donor section, Emergency Department and peripheral lab.
Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, the students will be able to : 1. Apply appropriate procedures in identification, documentation and perform successful venipuncture techniques on patients. 2. Perform correct handling methods to label blood and non-blood specimens and enter accurate patient information in the Laboratory Information System. 3. Practice donor selection criteria in recruiting suitable donors and develop skills in performing blood donation procedures. 4. Demonstrate specific procedures in performing venipuncture on antenatal mothers. 5. Apply technical skills in a peripheral laboratory. 6. Demonstrate blood collection from intra venous lines. 7. Demonstrate proper placement of ECG electrodes and connections to ECG systems.
