Unit Code: AMA465

Unit Name: Inertial Navigation and Inertial Reference Systems

Description: This unit is to familiarise the student with inertial navigation systems (INS) and inertial reference systems (IRS). This will provide the student with the underpinning knowledge necessary to carry out workshop maintenance, servicing, testing and fault finding on INS and IRS.

Learning Target Outcomes: On successful completion of this course, students will be able to; a) Compare different navigation methods and describe how the information is presented on both conventional and electronic navigational instruments and systems. b) explain the fundamental principles of inertial navigation systems. c) describe the layout of a simple INS and its associated components. d) describe the construction and analyse the operation of a semi-analytical INS. e) describe the modes of operation of an INS. f) describe the application of ring laser gyros in an inertial reference system. g) analyse the operation of an inertial reference system and associated components.
