Business Excellence (BE) is about developing and strengthening the management systems and processes of an organization to improve performance and create value for stakeholders.

BE is much more than having a quality system in place. BE is about achieving excellence in everything that an organization does (including leadership, strategy, customer focus, information management, people and processes) and most importantly achieving superior business results.

The Fiji Business Excellence Awards (FBEA) is a set of prestigious national awards designed to improve productivity and quality in organizations in Fiji.

The FBEA was introduced in Fiji to promote business excellence by providing a Framework or Criteria for assessment that is based on similar principles as other Business Excellence (BE) or Quality Awards throughout the world.

The Fiji Business Excellence Awards was formerly known as the Fiji Quality Awards and was the brain child of the 1995 Round Table Conference where representatives of the Unions, Employers and Government met to draw up a Roadmap for Fiji’s Productivity Movement.

It was here that the idea of implementing a Business Excellence Framework for Fiji was adopted into the Productivity Charter of 1995 and later in 2005.

The vision of the Fiji Business Excellence Awards Secretariat, which has the responsibility of administering the Awards program, is to create world-class organizations and to bring a better quality of life for our people.

The aims of the Fiji Business Excellence Awards are to;

1. Help organisations attain world - class quality in products and services.

2. Provide recognition to excellent organisations.

3. Provide a framework for sustainable improvement through quality management.

This vision goes beyond the competitive performance of organizations to embrace the concept of all in Fiji working together to create a clean, safe, fair and prosperous society.

The Fiji Business Excellence Awards has come a long way from its humble beginnings, to the successful awards system that it is today.

Applicants for the awards have included organisations from the public and private sector, large and small enterprises, both local and international companies.

These organizations have benefitted immensely from their participation in the awards process and have continued to use the awards framework as an Organizational Self-Assessment tool for recognition.

Leading Fijian and Fiji based multinational organizations use the Framework to achieve great benefit from the structure it provides to their management strategy. Some of these leading organizations have been using the Framework to assess themselves and build those results into their strategic planning processes.

Although Fiji has yet to conduct a rigorous study on the impact of Business Excellence implementation on our local industries, we have received numerous feedbacks and testimonies over the years from implementing organisations that it improves their bottom-line across financial and non-financial performance indicators.


There has been considerable research undertaken on how high performing organizations have achieved their success.

“BE Core Values and Concepts”

To understand BE, it is necessary to understand the core values and concepts from which Business Excellence Models (BEMs) were derived. In this section, the eleven (11) core values and concepts are explained.

When these are applied across your organization, it provides a powerful and integrated philosophy of Leadership.

1. Visionary Leadership: Your organization’s senior leaders should set directions and create a customer focus, clear and visible organizational values, and high expectations for the workforce. The directions, values, and expectations should balance the needs of all your stakeholders.

2. Customer-driven Excellence: Performance and quality are judged by an organization’s customers. Thus, your organization must take into account all product features and characteristics and all modes of customer access and support that contribute value to your customers.

3. Organizational and Personal Learning: Achieving the highest levels of organizational performance requires a well-executed approach to organizational and personal learning that includes sharing knowledge via systematic processes.

Organizational learning includes both continuous improvement of existing approaches and significant change or innovation, leading to new goals and approaches.

4. Valuing Workforce members and Partners: An organization’s success depends increasingly on an engaged workforce that benefits from meaningful work, clear organizational direction, and performance accountability and that has a safe, trusting, and cooperative environment.

5. Agility: Success in today’s ever-changing, globally competitive environment demands agility - a capacity for rapid change and flexibility.

6. Focus on the Future: Ensuring an organization’s sustainability requires understanding the short and longer term factors that affect your organization and marketplace.

7. Managing for Innovation: Making meaningful change to improve an organization’s products, services, programs, processes, operations, and business model to create new value for the organization’s stakeholders.

8. Management by Fact: Organizations depend on the measurement and analysis of performance. Such measurements should derive from business needs and strategy, and they should provide critical data and information about key processes, outputs, and results.

9. Societal responsibility: An organization’s leaders should stress responsibilities to the public, ethical behaviour, and the need to consider societal well-being and benefit.

10. Focus on Results and Creating Value: An organization’s performance measurements need to focus on key results. Results should be used to create and balance value for your key stakeholders.

11. Systems Perspective: Managing your whole organization holistically and understands how its components interact, and are aligned to achieve success.
