The Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) General Operators (GOC), Course is intended for navigating officers and radio officers and encompasses competence, knowledge, understanding and proficiency required for personnel operating radio equipment to carryout radio communication duties as prescribed in section A-IV/2 of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping for seafarers, (STCW) 1978 as amended 2010.

The Ministry Course Approval Number is MTP/01/MS-410/2014.


Successful completion of the course would enable candidates to obtain competence to transmit and receive, information using GMDSS subsystems and equipment to perform functional requirements of GMDSS, and to provide radio services in emergencies.


To enable navigating officers to obtain mandatory competency in Radio Communication.


Course duration is 10 working days 65 hours, 6.5 working hours per day for maximum of 8 participants. Total duration can be increased to 16 days 104 hours, 6.5 working hours per day for 9 to 14 participants.


This course is open to seafarers who require GMDSS GOC as a mandatory qualification. They must be over 18 years of age and hold Basic Fire Fighting. First Aid at Sea, Proficiency in Survival at Sea, Personnel Safety and Social Responsibility certificates, medical fitness certificate issued by a medical practitioner approved by the DGMS and have adequate knowledge in English sufficient to follow the course. Those who require GMDSS GOC as a general radio operating qualification must have at least passes in six subjects including English Language at GCE (O/L) or equivalent certificate.

Maximum 8 participants per course and on demand up to a maximum of 14. Trainee to trainer ratio is 8:1
