Overview and Structure

National Training & Productivity Centre (NTPC) was formed following the endorsed merger of the then Training & Productivity Authority of Fiji (TPAF) with the Fiji National University (FNU) on November 29, 2010. However, the former TPAF will continue to function, now as the National Training and Productivity Centre (NTPC) of the FNU with 2 different sections i.e, the Technical & Vocational Education & Training and the NTPC of the FNU. Training is the main preoccupation of the Centre and as such, it conducts approximately 2000 short-to-medium term training programmes which last from one day to several weeks. The training programmes are targeted towards building industry capacity and equipping professionals, individuals and school leavers with relevant and contemporary skills for a sustainable career.

Key functions of NTPC as mandated through the FNU amended Decree 2010 are as follows:

  • Ensure that the in-service training needs of the industries in Fiji are met at all times.
  • Manage Apprenticeship System in Fiji.
  • Promote Productivity and Business Excellence programmes in industry and act as the National Productivity Organisation for Fiji on behalf of the Government.
  • Be responsible for training grants within the budgetary provisions and financial policies of the University.
  • Carry out such trade test as are necessary for fulfilling the objective of training for national development.
  • Carry out such other responsibilities relating to industry training needs as are delegated to the National Centre by the Senate or the Vice- Chancellor.

In 2010, Cabinet endorsed the merger of TPAF to FNU. However, the former TPAFcontinued to functionas the National Training and Productivity Centre (NTPC) of the FNU.After the merger, NTPC underwent a restructure to ensure efficiency and improved responsiveness to the industry needs. The three training divisions of NTPC are as follows:

  • Division of Business and Information Technology
  • Division of Executive Management and Hospitality Services
  • Division of Technical Training 

Other than the three training divisions, the Department of National Trade Test and the Department of National Apprenticeship falls under the ambit of Directorate.
