Department of Forestry

Welcome to the Department of Forestry, which operates within the College of Agriculture, Fisheries & Forestry. The department  has been specifically designed to provide a proper training programmes that targets the needs of Fiji's Forestry Industry based on the recommendations of ITTO (International Tropical Timber Organisation (2002) and FAO, Forest Sector Review of 1989).

The department is one of the new departments introduced in mid-2009 at Fiji Institute of Technology.  Before the introduction of the departments programme, students had to travel overseas to countries such as New Zealand or Cyprus to gain a Diploma qualification, which was expensive and meant students had to heavily rely on sponsors.

The main objective of the Department is produce highly skilled forestry graduates to manage both plantation and nature forest on a sustainable basis. There is a huge shortage of forestry graduates, especially at Diploma level, in Fiji forest industries and current students are approached by potential employers before they graduate.

Forestry is viewed as an important sector in economic, social and environmental development (especially in the situation of global warming). In Fiji, there is enormous asset wood waiting to be harvested, processed and manufactured (value-added) into useful products creating employment opportunities and contributing to foreign earnings for the country.

The department is currently offering two programmes Tade Diploma in Forestry and Trade Diploma in Wood Processing and Value Adding. These programmes offer a wide range of subjects from natural and plantation forestry management, wood processing, marketing and international trade of wood products, bio-security, agro-forestry and community forestry, environmental forestry, small forestry business and entrepreneurship.

To provide quality, the department depends heavily on the combination of three activities: training, research and extension. By integrating these activities, staff members increase their knowledge and skills, as well as broaden their attitudes, ultimately enhancing the quality of the teaching and learning process. Staff are widely experienced in government and the private sector and have the capability to produce the quality graduates Fiji Forest Industries needs in government, NGO's, private companies or to establish their own business.

Thank you
