I would like to warmly welcome you to the Department of Agriculture, one of four departments at the College of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry. Agriculture is a wide subject area. It covers many disciplines such as soil science, plant pathology, entomology, crop production, engineering, agricultural economics, extension, marketing and management. The prospects that exist after graduation are also varied. There are opportunities to become farm business persons, teachers, extension officers, agricultural economists, agricultural technisions, researchers, scientists, managers and consultant assistants. The department currently offers a Bachelor of Science degree, Higher Diploma in Agriculture, Trade Diploma in Agriculture, Certificate IV in Agriculture and short courses in: Plant Propagation and Nursery Management, Apiculture, Commercial Floriculture, Ornamental Horticulture, Landscaping, and, a Certificate IV course in Horticulture. The preference to offer our own Bachelor of Science in Agriculture has evolved through the need to fill the current gap in the local agriculture industry. Incorporated into this degree are specialist subjects allowing graduates to be proficient in any one of the disciplines mentioned above. The Trade Dploma in Agriculture replaces the Diploma in Tropical Agriculture formerly offered by the Fiji College of Agriculture. This Trade Diploma has condensed the former three-year programme into a two-year one. This allows a shorter learning period for students. The Short Courses in Horticulture have been specifically designed to cater for persons who do not have the time for full-time study and who opt for a shorter study duration. It also offers the opportunity for persons who are already securely employed and who need additional qualifications to progress in their career or establish their own business. It focuses heavily on skills attainment in the area of horticulture. The department is well serviced with physical and human resources. It offers its programmes in two campuses namely Koronivia and Nadi. It has its own livestock and crop farms. It also has experienced and highly qualified staff. The agriculture department is committed to offering accessible and applicable programmes given the changing nature of agriculture. This will ensure that students enrolled for a programme in the department will be equipped to address the current issues in the agriculture industry. To all new, continuing and prospective students, my staff and I look forward to taking you through your jouney of learning in the agriculture department and will provide every opportunity for you to realise your academic goals here. May I wish you a dynamic and successful year of learning.
