Department of Animal Science

Welcome to the Department of Animal Science, a newly established department within the College of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.

The Department currently offers a Higher Education Diploma in Animal Health which is a two year programme consisting of six trimesters. The Department of Animal science is committed to empower students to pursue regulatory privileges in animal health, animal welfare and provide an opportunity for further education in the future.

The Department is mainly responsible to produce graduates with sound animal health knowledge and practical skills to enable them contribute to the animal health sector of the agriculture industry by administering curative/preventive measures/ treatments for livestock in their nation.

The graduates of the programme will be able to confidently practice and advocate basic animal health issues prevalent in their nation and provide practical solutions for them. Animal health issues in Fiji and the Pacific Islands are yet to be fully addressed. Graduates of this programme will be able to bridge the gap that requires basic knowledge on occurrence of diseases, their preventive or curative measures which has been greatly lacking in the Agriculture industry for a long time. The need for licensed officers is also in demand to carry out regulatory obligations in the livestock industry. This will be enhanced after graduating from this programme.

Personnel currently employed in the livestock industry are many yet only a few are equipped with basic animal health licences. As many have been prevented from carrying out basic animal health procedures because of government laws, this programme has been developed to address this issue. This programme will aid in obtaining a licence and practice in confidence.

Fiji and the neighbouring island nations are expected to benefit from this programme

Thank you
