Background

These programmes will be offered under the College of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries via the Department of Agriculture. The programme was developed with the similar criterion of what other comparator institutions in Australia/New Zealand are offering.   This programme is developed to offer an effective solution for organizations facing shortage of skilled professionals to undertake Landscaping and Horticultural work. Horticulture is a diverse industry which encompasses all things green. From greenhouses, home landscaping and floral shops to football fields, golf courses, forests and town/city. The horticulture industry offers a variety of opportunities.

Greenhouses are widely used to grow and protect vegetables around the world.  For certain vegetable crops, greenhouses present several advantages with respect to field production.  In greenhouses, crops lead to greater yields, higher quality, and the harvest season is extended per unit of cropped area.This unit aims at integrating an understanding of basic plant physiological mechanisms into the decision making process involved in the greenhouse designs, coverings, heating, cooling and watering systems. Basically the unit targets to deliver the understanding of day to day management of greenhouse operations.

This course allows students to be able to know the definition of pest, type of animal pests: insect, nematode, mite, mollusks and vertebrate pests, type of diseases caused by fungi, bacteria, virus and spiroplasmas, common pests, diseases and weeds of horticultural crops.  Characters of different categories of crop pests. Impact of different categories of pests.

IPM & IDM: definition and methods.  Definition of pesticides. Types of pesticides: insecticide, fungicide, bactericide, weedicide. Pesticide formulations, interpretation of labels of pesticides. Biopesticide: botanical and microbial pesticides.  Common natural enemies of insect pests of horticultural crops: Predator, parasitoid and pathogen.  Important Plant protection equipments, features and functions of duster and sprayer.  Handling precautions, waiting period.  Insecticide residues and their management.   Common insect pollinators of horticultural crops and their conservation.
