Prerequisite Certificate: Engineer Class 2

Required Sea Service:
(a) 12 months approved seagoing service on ships powered by main engine of 3000 kW propulsion power or more on unlimited voyage as an Engineer Officer in charge of an engine-room watch on ships using propulsion of the kind to which the certificate relates whilst holding a Certificate of Competency as an Engineer Class 2;
or
(b) 24 months approved sea service. 12 months served on ships of not less than 750 kW propulsion power while holding a certificate as Engineer Watchkeeper and 12 months must be served on ships of not less than 3,000 kW propulsion power while holding a certificate as Engineer Class 2 and serving in the capacity of second engineer on ships using propulsion of the kind to which the certificate relates.

Course of Study
Must have satisfactorily completed an appropriate course of study that at least meets the standards specified in Table A-III/2 of the STCW Code’78, as amended and includes management training and knowledge of the International Safety Management Code and relevant simulator training and assessment.
Hold the following current Certificates:
(a) valid Certificate of Medical Fitness for service in the engine department;
(b) valid eye sight and color test certificate;
(c) Certificate of Proficiency in survival craft and rescue boats other than fast rescue boats. Section A-VI/2-1 of the STCW Code’78, as amended;
(d) Medical First Aid at Sea. Section A-VI/4-1 of the STCW Code’78, as amended;
(e) Advanced Firefighting and Control. Section A-VI/3 of the STCW Code’78, as amended;
(f) Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities. Section A- VI/1-4 of the STCW Code’78, as amended; and
(g) Engine Resource Management Certificate.
(h) Security Awareness Training. Section A-VI/6 of the STCW Code’78, as amended.

Examination
Must have passed an oral examination in appropriate operational knowledge conducted by a governing body marine engineer Examiner.

Prerequisite Certificate: Mate Class 1, Master Class 2 and meet the requirement for certification of an officer in charge of a navigational watch of ships not less than 500 gross tonnage and have approved seagoing service in that capacity.

Required Sea Service:

(a) 12 months of seagoing service, with the candidate holding a Master Class 2 Certificate of Competency;
or
(b) 36 months approved seagoing service in charge of a navigation watch on ships 500 gross tonnage or over while holding a Certificate of Competency not lower than Deck Watchkeeper;
or
(c) In the case of (a) and (b) at least 12 months must have been served on trading ships of 3000 gross tonnage or over on unlimited voyage.

Course of Study

Must have satisfactorily completed an appropriate course of study that at least meets the standards specified in Table A-II/2 of the STCW Code’78, as amended and includes management training and knowledge of the International Safety Management Code and includes practical training in ECDIS, ARPA, radar and electronic navigation and relevant simulator training and assessment.

Must hold the following current Certificates:

(a) valid Certificate of Medical Fitness for service in the deck department;
(b) valid eye sight and color test certificate;
(c) Certificate of Proficiency in survival craft and rescue boats other than fast rescue Boats - Section A-VI/2-1 of the STCW Code’78, as amended;
(d) Medical care. Section A-VI/4, Paragraphs 4-6 of the STCW Code’78, as amended;
(e) Advanced Firefighting and Control. Section A-VI/3 of the STCW Code’78, as amended;
(f) Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities. Section A- VI/1-4 of the STCW Code’78, as amended;
(g) GMDSS General Operators Certificate; or Radio Operators Certificate
(h) Bridge Resource Management Certificate.

Examination

Must have passed a written, oral and practical examination in appropriate operational knowledge conducted by a governing body Nautical Examiner.

Engineer Officer Cadet Training Program

Officer-in-Charge of an Engineering Watch Training Programme is based on requirements of Regulation III/1, Sec. A-III/1, Table A-III/1 of the IMO STCW 2010 Convention.

The trainees who successfully complete the programme are eligible to appear for the Certificate of Competency Officer-in-Charge of an Engineering Watch Examination conducted by the Maritime Safety Authority,
LEARNING OBJECTIVE
On successful completion of the Program and examination the trainees should possess sufficient knowledge, understanding and proficiency to achieve the following competencies:-

1.1 ENGINEER OFFICER CADET TRAINING PROGRAM-STAGE 1

  • Use appropriate tools for fabrication and repair operations typically performed on ships.
  • Use hand tools and measuring equipment for dismantling, maintenance, repair and re-assembly of shipboard plant and equipment.
  • Use hand tools, electrical and electronic measuring and test equipment for fault finding, maintenance and repair operations.
  • Maintain a safe engineering watch.
  • Use English in written and oral form.
  • Operate main and auxiliary machinery and associated control systems.
  • Operate pumping systems and associated control systems.
  • Operate alternators, generators and control systems.
  • Maintain marine engineering systems, including control systems.
  • Ensure compliance with pollution-prevention requirements
  • Maintain sea-worthiness of the ship.
  • Prevent, control and fight fires on board.
  • Operate life-saving appliances.
  • Apply medical first aid on board ship.
  • Monitor compliance with legislative requirements
  • Extra training in activities for physical strength and mental stability

PURPOSE
The purpose of this course is to provide the participant the knowledge, skills and understanding to elevate himself form secondary school leaver to a qualified Watch keeping Marine Engineer.
COURSE DURATION

  • Stage I - 6 months at FMA - 6 months Industrial Attachment
  • Stage II - 9 months supervised Shipboard-board training.
  • Stage III - 3 months at FMA
  • Stage IV - 9 months supervised Shipboard training
  • Stage V - 6 months at FMA

Total Duration 39 months

ENTRY STANDARDS / LERNER STATUS
Phase I
This course is open for:
Those who comply with the minimum standards and requirements stipulated by the Academy as per Approved course No. MTP/01/ED-201/2014.
(The HoD(ED) reserves the right to waiver the upper limit of the age requirement, in case of a candidate displaying exceptional capabilities.)
Those who comply with the minimum standards and requirements stipulated by the Academy.

  • Shall not be less than 18 years of age and not more than 22 years of age, at the time of closing of applications

  • Successful at the FSLC Examination with minimum mark of, 50% Mathematics, Physics, and not less than 40% English.
