SCOPE

This course covers the mandatory minimum requirements as set out by the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF). No STCW 2010 as amended, requirements.

The Ministry Approved Number is MTP/01/ND-102/2014.

LEARNING OBJECTIVE

On completion of the course trainees will have the knowledge, understanding and competence in;

  • Vessel maneuvering and handling
  • Emergency procedures
  • Weather watch-keeping
  • Watch-keeping
  • Vessel construction
  • Rope work
  • Navigation

PURPOSE

To provide the trainee with the knowledge and skills required to manage and operate a vessel of less than 20 GT within inshore waters.

DURATION AND STRUCTURE

The duration of the course is 4 weeks and it is conducted by demand from the industry with a mixture of practical and theoretical and practical training. Training can be provided on and off the job

ENTRY STANDARDS / LEARNER STATUS

This course is open for those who comply with the minimum standards and requirements stipulated below.

  • Minimum age: 18 years
  • Pre-requisite Certificate: Basic Safety Certificate
  • Require sea service: Not less than 12 months approved sea-going service. Whilst holding a Basic Sea Safety Certificate

COURSE OF STUDY

Must have satisfactorily completed an appropriate course of study
Must hold the following current Certificates:

  • Valid certificate of medical fitness for services in the deck and engine department and
  • GMDSS Certificate (ROC)

Examination: Must have passed a written and an oral examination in appropriate operational knowledge conducted by a Nautical Examiner

COURSE INTAKE LIMITATIONS

  • Number of Students not to exceed 30.
  • As per the student number adequate classrooms/ laboratories/ workshops/ other facilities to be provided.
  • Learner / Trainer Ratio – 30:1
